In the state of Massachusetts, Lowell lies in Middlesex County. With a total area of 14.5 square miles, the city has a population of over 106,000 people. Lowell previously served as the county seat and administrative center for Middlesex County. This was before 1999, when Massachusetts had dissolved the County Government.
